The 2009 Frys.com Open defending champion, Troy Matteson, was born on November 8, 1979. Matteson started playing golf when he was seven and credits his real-life heroes, his parents, Steve Matteson and Lucy and John Steele for introducing him to the game. Early in Troy’s life one could tell that he had a knack for the game and with a little practice and a lot encouragement from his friends and family turning professional was an easy choice.

Matteson graduated from Georgia Tech with a degree in Civil Engineering while also playing on the Georgia Tech golf team. During that time Matteson was a three-time All-American, an All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, won the Byron Nelson Award in 2003 and became the first Georgia Tech player to win the NCAA individual championship in 2002. Throughout Matteson’s four year collegiate career, he won six times and had 15 top-10 finishes in 43 starts. Matteson is the Georgia Tech’s all-time fourth ranked golfer with a scoring average of 71.91, behind Bryce Molder, David Duval and Matt Kuchar.

Upon graduation in 2003 Matteson turned pro. Spending the first three years of his professional career on the Nationwide Tour, Matteson has two Nationwide Tour wins under his belt – 2005 Virginia Beach Open Presented by ACS Sys & Eng., 2005 Mark Christopher Charity Classic Presented by Adelphia.

It wasn’t until 2006 when Matteson made his PGA TOUR debut.  Matteson had a remarkable rookie year ending with five consecutive top-10s, including a victory at the 2006 Frys.com Open Matteson, who shot all four rounds in the 60s including middle rounds of 65-64, become the sixth player and third consecutive player to capture his first TOUR victory in Las Vegas.

Fast forward to 2009 and again Troy Matteson is the defending Frys.com Open champion (We know it’s confusing, but despite the name the 2006 Frys.com Open is a completely different tournament than the current Frys.com Open). The 2009 victory came in dramatic fashion when he beat up-and-comers Rickie Fowler and Jamie Lovemark in a two-hole playoff.

The 2010 season has been good to Matteson so far. He has made three-out-of-four cuts earning him total of $140,316. Additionally, Matteson currently ranks 45th in the FedExCup standing. Look for Troy to successfully defend his title at the 2010 Frys.com Open as he continues to build momentum throughout the season.

Fry’s Electronics would again like to congratulate Troy Matteson on his 2009 Frys.com Open victory and look forward to seeing him again in 2010.
